Joint for ball-jointed-doll?

For my A-Level Art project I will be making a life-size clay, ball-jointed-doll (about 5'5").

The only problem is, although I know how the joints are supposed to work and how they're meant to attach, I'm not sure how I do the slits in the ball-joints which allow the wire to move and thus let me pose the doll.

Does anyone have any knowledge or know of any good websites for this sort of thing?

Also, if anyone knows anywhere in England which sells long, cosplay-like wigs that would be a great help too ^_^

what material are you using? Resin or similar structure you can add any piercing into material by drilling a small hole into the area you want to remove and then use a jeweler's saw to saw the area you don't want out. A jeweler's saw has thin sawblades which you can remove at either end, so you can thread the sawblade through a hole. In a pinch drilling a lot of holes close together and then filing smooth can work too. Or if you cast the part make your mold accordingly.

You may want to check out this website, it has about everything about ball-jointed-doll you want to know, including do-it-yourself instructions:

Do it with sound. Black backdrop, lower all lights to nil, dripping water sound effect, footsteps in shallow water sound effects, even a squeeky rat sound effect. Have the all the actors carry flashlights. If its dark enough, you can do some fun things with blocking the actors and the position of the lights as people enter/exit the scene.

http://www.findsounds.com will help you find ambient sounds like dripping water, sewer rat, and maybe even footsteps in water. I'd have one of my go-getter students or stage manager put together an MP3 loop you can play over the sound system (or mike a boombox if necessary).

without a base/background is my preference because one can always add a background if desired for some special event or showing. One can always change the doll's attire and then add a background, for a showing as desired. One pays for the ready or included background. Why? Limits one's selectionability for just the doll does it not?
The doll is what is important. Put your $$ into that and not pay for an included background until you need such AND then make it yourself to suit.

I actually bought Leya from Dream of Doll a few years ago, so I think I can help here. Unfortunately for that doll, her outfit is not available anywhere. It was a custom or something that they no longer have the rights to produce, so unless you can make it yourself, that particular outfit isn't available for purchase. As for her random eyes and random wig, it's just as it sounds. They randomly pick a wig and eyes to go into the doll and ship her with those. You don't have any say in the matter as to what she will come with, although I have heard of some people asking for particular colored eyes in the past. Also, she won't come with her face painted unless you tell them to, so make sure if you want her to have blush/lipstick/eyelashes and such you select that option or she will arrive with a completely blank face.

all – lest i give you the impression that i crafted this thing from three pieces of felt and a shoestring -

    a) it's not nearly as hard as it looks

    and

    b) i am the queen of outsourcing. long live google!!

i bought the muslin doll body at our local craft store. yes, they sell doll bodies – you do not have to design them, sew them or even stuff them. all pre-done.

the hair was a struggle – a blond afro doll wig is a tough call, but google didn't let me down.

then came the clothes. i knew i was over my skis with the clothes. creating tiny little doll shirts and pants is way, way beyond my skill level. and so, i googled. and googled and googled and googled. and i found my angel.

kris was a godsend. i told her my story – odd as it was – and pled for her help. she graciously let me bombard her with photos (and even videos) from the movie and she (seemingly) never lost patience with me. i'm fairly certain this is not her typical job and i was definitely not her typical customer.

i was really, really, really impressed by her work. it was quick, incredibly well done and VERY fairly priced. i will be forever in her debt.

so if you ever need any custom doll clothes, PLEASE drop her a line and tell her the crazy godspell lady sent you. :)
