celluloid doll restoration?
hi there,
my name is Ken I am from Manila Philippines. I got your contact details through Yahoo! Answer link.
I am a doll collector. I like Japanese dolls , porcelain dolls and lastly I am seeing a joy in celluloid dolls. To be honest celluloid dolls were abundant in Manila 25 years ago (I am in 29 years old now). I just regret that I did not start doll collection at an early age due to various reasons.
Anyways, I am willing to restore these dolls my colleague gave me. I know that I can still make the best out of them. Some for obvious reasons need cleaning and washing but how?
Hope you can help me.
Thank you
I have been working on Celluloid for some time now. Celluloid for sometime in the European countries too starting in the late 1800's, the heavier was used later into the 50's.Many people think its plastic, but it is not, so their repairs are in correct. The early celluloid was very flammable, so be careful. Especially if you use heat in the process of dents removing.
I have a book A century of Celluloid dolls, by Shirley Buchholz should be available on WWW.Addallbooks.com, they are world wide, net work of book sellers..
I find the hardest is the restringing that takes patience. But most important is the use of acetone, and fine brushes. That melts the celluloid so you can patch it and seal, it takes practice.
I am expecting company so I will finish this later.
I was mine with a gentle soap, the Japanese used lots of the paint is water solvable, you can use Golden paints they seem to paint nicely, and it will remove if needed. In restoring I try just to repaint what is missing. Many thing such as other little animals and toys were made in this medium too.
Here is some samples of another persons work so you can see what can be done.
