HOW CAN I RESTRING A 12" PORCELAIN DOLL (ARMS & HEAD).WHAT DO I NEED TO DO THIS...?
...JOB,WHERE CAN I FIND INFO AND MATERIALS
DETAILED PICTURE INFORMATION WOULD BE IDEAL.
eBay auction Item number: 320122508984 is for a doll restringing kit - you can see from the photos on the auction what supplies you need. The description says:
"THIS KIT CONTAINS A COPY OF THE ALL ABOUT DOLL REPAIR & CARE BOOK SIGNED BY AUTHOR, A BOTTLE OF CAROL'S MIRACLE DOLL CLEANER, 3 SIZES OF DOLL REPAIR HEMOSTAT TOOLS TO RESTRING YOUR DOLLS WITH, 3 YARDS DOLL RESTRING ELASTIC CORD WITH A SAUCY WALKER NECK LOOP, 15 SMALL DOLL RESTRING HOOKS, 15 MEDIUM DOLL RESTRING HOOKS, 15 LARGE DOLL RESTRING HOOKS, HOW TO MAKE A DOLL WIG INSTRUCTIONS, AND A SAMPLE OF DOLL HAIR SHAMPOO! ...
...THESE NICE QUALITY (HEMOSTAT) CLAMPS WILL MAKE YOUR DOLL RESTRINGING A MUCH EASIER TASK! THEY ARE MADE FROM STAINLESS STEEL AND HAVE TEETH THAT HOLD THE ELASTIC FIRMLY WHILE YOU PULL IT TIGHT WHEN RESTRINGING. THE 5 1/2" LONG HEMOSTAT CLAMP IS GREAT FOR THOSE SMALLER, NARROW DOLL BODIES. THE 7.25" LONG STRAIGHT HEMOSTAT CLAMP IS NICE FOR THOSE LARGER, AND DEEPER SPACES IN THE LARGER DOLLS. THE 7.25" LONG CURVED TIP HEMOSTAT IS SUPER FOR THE AREAS YOU CANNOT REACH WITH A STRAIGHT TOOL AND WORKS NICELY TO HOLD THE RESTRING ELASTIC AGAINST A ROUND OPENING IN THE TORSO OF THE DOLL WHILE RESTRINGING. YOU WILL NEVER RESTRING ANOTHER DOLL WITHOUT THESE!!
THE DOLL RESTRING ELASTIC CORD IS THE ROUND CLOTH COVERED ELASTIC THAT IS USED TO RESTRING DOLLS. IF YOU HAVE SEVERAL SIZES OF DOLLS TO RESTRING THIS IS THE ELASTIC YOU WILL NEED. 1 YARD EACH OF 3 SIZES OR WE CAN SEND 3 YARDS OF THE SAME SIZE ELASTIC IF YOU ARE RESTRINGING ONLY ONE SIZE AND TYPE OF DOLL.
THE SMALL DOLL RESTRING HOOKS ARE THE SMALL HOOKS USED TO RESTRING 12" OR SMALLER DOLLS. THE MEDIUM HOOKS ARE THE HOOKS USED TO RESTRING 14" TO 22" DOLLS. THE LARGE DOLL RESTRING HOOKS ARE THE LARGE HOOKS USED TO RESTRING 22" OR LARGER DOLLS. MOST DOLLS NEED 5 HOOKS AND THIS AUCTION HAS ENOUGH HOOKS TO RESTRING 9 DIFFERENT DOLLS. HOWEVER, YOU NEED TO REMEMBER THAT IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THE ORIGINAL HOOKS THESE MAY BE USED TO SUPPLEMENT THE HOOKS IN THIS AUCTION. WE ARE ALSO INCLUDING A SAUCY WALKER NECK LOOP USED IN RESTRING SAUCY'S HEAD AS A BONUS ITEM. "
The same seller is offering just the book for $20 (Item number: 320008605740). The store is All-About-Your-Dolls (http://stores.ebay.com/All-About-Your-Dolls_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZQ2d33QQftidZ2QQtZkm)
http://allaboutyourdolls.com/ has a way for you to ask for free restringing instructions, so I did, and they are as follows:
RESTRINGING YOUR DOLL
Measure a piece of round elastic
approximately 2 1/2 times the length of the your doll body
from the shoulder to the hip.
1. Find the middle of the elastic and
secure a hook to it. The opposite end of the hook is
placed inside the head of the doll and hooked to
the rod across from ear to ear. (Some dolls will
have a wire bale that is attached to the inside
of the head on each side above the ear. This bale
swings freely and is easily seen at the neck.
Secure the hook around this bale.) Be very careful
NOT to secure any part of the hook or elastic on
any part of the eye mechanism.
2. Feed each end of the elastic into each
armhole securing one end of the hook around the
elastic and the other onto the arm repeat on the
other side.
3. Feed the ends of the elastic on through
the body with an end out of each leg hole.
Secure a hook to the elastic and to the leg nearest
you, then feed that end of elastic through the
crotch of the body to the other leg hole. Secure a
hook to this same piece of elastic and to the leg
on that side. THIS IS IMPORTANT, as you want the
"tie" of the elastic to end up between the arm
hole and the leg hole and NOT between the legs at
the crotch, as the elastic will not hold the limbs
as well.
4. PULL THE TWO ENDS OF THE ELASTIC TIGHT,
stretching it tight and then tie the ends
together at least 3 times. A surgical clamp is a
wonderful tool to use at this time to hold those ends
of elastic tight while you are tying the knots.
Cut off the excess elastic, leaving about 1 1/2"
on each end.
Tip # 1. When you get to the point, if an arm or
a leg wants to swing to the back rather than stay
where you want to pose it, you need to pull that
arm or leg out of the "hole". Undo the hook and
reverse the way you put the hook through the
elastic. You can put a pencil through the elastic to
hold it out of the armhole so you can change the
direction of the hook.
Tip #2. As I mentioned, about the surgical
clamp, if you are going to string several dolls, or
"go into the business" you will find it a constant
companion. It is also handy to use to "fish" the
ends of the elastic down through the body. (I
have several pair of these in different sizes and
lengths and would be lost without them now.)
These can usually be purchased at a nearby flea
market where all kinds of scissors, etc., are sold.
They may be available in hobby or craft stores by
now also.
If you have any questions, please feel free to
email me. I'll be glad to try to help. I have
been repairing and rest

Opeth - Porcelain Heart
How much would a "Baby Bylo" (sp?) doll be appraised at?
I have a 24", hand-made, porcelain "Baby Bylo" doll. (I think that that's how my grandmother spelled it) And I was curious to know how much it might be worth. She has porcelain head and hands and a cloth body. She is dressed in a cotton "christening gown", also hand-made.
if she is a reproduction the price is up to the person who wants her. if she is an antique the sky is the limits. the bye lo was made by Grace Story Putnam....the face was masked from a deceased African American new born baby. if you look at your doll you will see the characteristics, like the nose and the mouth. she did a beautiful job making that baby eternally beautiful and the doll is still loved to this date. she designed a frog legged body for this doll...it makes it snugly and is very much like a new born body would be. you just have to love it.

The porcelain head. Did you buy the head? If you did, I’m going to make a special trip to your house, knock you out and steal the head. And you’ll never find us.

Well, I made my boppers, but they didn't work out so well for me.
After just a little pounding on some porcelain, the heads would pop off. Apparently the epoxy just won't stand up to the stress. Or I'm not suppose to bop so hard. Not sure which.
I got to thinking about it, and asked myself why did the handle need to be made from a wooden dowel? Why not just use a piece of copper pipe for the handle? I think I'll just silver-solder some copper pipe onto my caps for a handle and see how that works. It should be more durable.
In the meantime, I am practicing pressure flaking on some beer bottle bottoms, using a flaker I made from some 2 AWG copper wire inserted into the end of a dowel. It works pretty sweet, but then glass isn't near as tough as porcelain.
Just go before I throw something at your little porcelain head. *says shakily*
